Hi,
I broke my wrist 11 days ago (radius + a carpal bone) in a cycling accident whilst abroad (so I have a copy of the X-rays). I lay on the ground thinking that I need to check myself out before moving. Pain? None. Looked at myself, all but left wrist, OK. Visually obvious broken wrist. Got up, moved bike off cycle path using right hand only. Thought I will go into shock, so sat down, then went into shock for a few mins. Car stopped and phoned emergency services. I was now stood up and walking. Still no pain! Paramedics offered me pain relief which I refused as I had no pain. General anaesthetic/operation within 3 hours. Stayed in hospital overnight, refused pain relief as no pain. The radius has 2 pins in it and the arm/wrist is in a polyester cast. (plaster cast for 4 days, changed day before returning home) Looking at the X-rays, after the accident my broken radius was overlapping by about 25mm. My local hospital tells me that the brake is unstable and I may need a plate if the join moves during the next 2 weeks.
My question is this ... why did I not feel any pain? I have had no pain at all! Generally I feel pain like anyone else. I am concerned as pain is the body's mechanism for telling us to stop doing something. With no pain, I am so afraid to move my fingers/undertake the "fist" exercises I have been given to do in case the unstable join moves and I have to undertake another operation.
I am 55. The last time I broke a bone was when I was 9 (collar bone, falling in playground). It was 3 days before my Dad took me to the Dr. as he thought my shoulder was low and he was aware of my fall. But I then had no pain. Am I normal?
Please Help.
Thanks,
