I was trying to search around the internet for chiropractic information or message boards, but it seemed like everywhere I went people were slanderous and criticizing the profession.
Regardless, I personally had a great experience with chiropractic and I am glad you made this site so myself and other happy patients can also share the chiropractic message.
My chiropractic story:
My name is Joe and I have been under chiropractic care for almost a year now and am happy to say, with incredible results! I know it sounds so cliche, but I have my life back now...
Up until 6 months ago I had been experiencing recurring right arm numbness, neck pain, and dizziness for about 5-6 years. It started very lightly during the first 3 years then gradually just got worse and worse until it really started affecting my daily life. Time with the family, work motivation, and any type of physical activities went down hill fast. Sometimes if I really aggravated my arm the numbness got so bad that I started losing movement and control of grasping things.
During that time I took numerous medications and saw a dozen medical professionals, but like I am sure some of you know, the relief from medications and pain killers wore off quickly. Neurologists, family doctors, pain specialists, physical therapy, and light strengthening programs all fell short in helping me with the actual problem.
At that point the approach of surgery was presented, but that scared the hell out of me and there was no way I was going under the knife without first and completely knowing what other options I had.
Around that time someone had mentioned I go see their chiropractor. This was not the first time I heard of the chiropractor, I just thought that there would be nothing they could do for my arm numbness and dizziness. So, I politely ignored my friends advice through a few excruciating weeks until I basically just gave up and had her drag me in.
Even though I had no understanding of how or if a chiropractor could help, it was my last option and I remember saying to myself that I should just give it my best. If it does nothing after a while I will opt to try the surgery.
I won't get into all the details but basically the doc first did a great job in explaining the procedures and why he was doing his adjustments. When he explained the nerve system and pointed out its direct connection and control over every part of my body, the chiropractic approach I was so blinded to started to make a whole lot of sense.
The doc put me under his care trying to realign the bones in my neck and the first 2-3 weeks I experienced no relief. Some days I thought I was even worse, but every time I went in the doc assured me that I was on the right path. He made sure to remind me that this problem didn't show up over night and it wasn't going to heal overnight either.
That made sense so I kept with it.
The process of healing and recovery ended up taking about 4 months from when I started my treatments, but seeing and experiencing the gradual progression kept me motivated. Unlike some other stories where people said they just woke up one day and the pain was gone, mine was a little more gradual. The pain just ended up being less and less until it just phased out of my life. Today, I only go into the doc's office for check ups and to make sure I don't start down the wrong path again, but I couldn't be happier with the results and regaining control of my life is a big game changer. My arm never goes numb now, I have yet to have a dizzy spell, and so far my neck pain is at least 70% better.
It seems so silly now, but when you go to a dozen medical professionals and they have no real answers for you, you begin to believe them. You start thinking that whatever the issue is, be ready to manage it for the rest of your life. I also started thinking that if there really was another way, the medical doctors would have told me! Oh how wrong of an assumption that was.
Talk about a dangerous way to think about your health right!? By trusting all the docs and not keeping my ears open to other options I needlessly went through years of pain. That is really my biggest regret during this whole time, assuming there was nothing effective out there.
Makes me feel a little embarrassed of myself because I don't consider myself to be so proud of a person that I think I got it all figured out. But regardless, thank you chiropractic for proving me wrong. I am 'awake' now to the power of the body. I hope in sharing my story it helps inspire suffering people to go see all you great docs FIRST!
Keep up the great work! I hope to see tons of wonderful people sharing and growing chiropractic here.
